How Donations Help
Family Health Centers of San Diego relies on the generosity of individuals, companies and foundations to fulfill our mission of providing compassionate, high quality medical care to uninsured families. Donations help us build and expand our clinics, purchase the latest medical equipment, provide services to uninsured kids, and much more.
Simply stated, we need you!
Below are just a few examples of how we've turned community donations into action.
Logan Heights Family Health Center Expansion Project
When we needed to expand our Logan Heights Family Health Center, we turned to the community for help. Over 1,100 individuals, corporations and foundations made donations to the project and collectively raised over $8 million dollars to fully fund the construction project. Donations ranged from a $5 money order from a grateful patient to a one million dollar contribution from the Moores Family. When new construction was finally complete, more than a few patients came up to staff and said, "I can't believe you built this beautiful clinic for us!"
KidCare Express Mobile Medical Unit Program
Our KidCare Express Mobile Medical Unit Program is one of the most important and effective, yet also most expensive programs we operate at Family Health Centers of San Diego. By delivering services out in the community in collaboration with trusted partners like local schools, we make sure that children get the healthcare services they need, when and where they need them. Each of our three mobile medical units is a comprehensive licensed clinic on wheels with two exam rooms, a nursing station, and a restroom. Thousands of San Diegans supported an annual auction event to raise over $500,000 to purchase the first two units (the third was donated to us by Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center). Today, local community groups like the Downtown Lions Club, Billy Casper Youth Foundation, and Hitachi Data Systems and Hitachi Home Electronic's Community Action Committees donate thousands of dollars each year to keep KidCare Express on the road and providing pediatric care to uninsured kids.
FOCUS's Clinic Baby Boutique
A little extra love goes a long way at Family Health Centers of San Diego. Several years ago, the Friends of Children United Society (FOCUS) helped develop a "clinic baby boutique" for prenatal patients at Family Health Centers of San Diego's Logan Heights Family Health Center. FOCUS's dedicated volunteers put their shopping skills to work and made sure that the boutique was always full of needed items like blankets, diapers and onesies. Moms-to-be got to pick out one item after every prenatal visit- ensuring that patients never wanted to miss an appointment! And, by the time the mom had attended all of her prenatal visits, she had a lovely layette for the baby.
Provider Medication Fund
The dedicated staff of Family Health Centers of San Diego are also donors! Many years ago a group of Family Health Centers of San Diego physicians started the Provider Medication Fund. Supported by staff and community donations, the fund is available to cover prescription costs for patients have no other resources and need a little helping hand. Over the years, staff raised money for the Provider Medication Fund in many creative ways, including asking for donations in lieu of birthday presents!
